Another Baby Quilt

So here's this baby quilt I've made for my best friends nice/nephew to come. Her sister, the mother, knows the gender of the baby but won't tell. Hence the green and equal use of red and blue in my quilt. The birthdate her sister has been given is 11.11.11 so we'll see if that will be it. But, for any case the quilt is finished. I machine appliqued and handquilted it. The design is a combination of 3 different patterns i found in the internet and then changed them to my gusto. As soon as the baby's born, I shall make a little patch for the back with the baby's name and the aunt's name and then my best friend will have to handstitch it because I will be sending it to her by mail. The quilt is already in her possession and we had a very nice dinner with lots of delicious wine at her house to celebrate it. She has the quilt lying on her bed everyday and she is very happy with the result. Me, too :-)

Lots of new Projects

I have just read my last post from December 2008 and I really can't remember what secret project I was talking about in there. Probably some gift for someone.

So I am not going to whine about how sad it makes me when I see abandoned blogs and now it's happend to mine again and I shall never again do so. The thing is i have no idea if I will be sticking with posting or not. But let's surely hope so and time will tell.
Looking back, many things have changed. We have moved to another city. Our beloved cat passed away. She was old and we knew it was going to happen some day but we still miss her every single day. We have not gotten another cat.

Patchwork wise, I think practice has helped me getting somewhat better. I can now actually tell if a project is too difficult for me or doable. This is very nice and motivating.

One good example is this really nice quilt top I got at ebay and it had been started by some elder lady and she never got to finish it so her family placed it in ebay since nobody was interested in quilting. So I purchased it and when, after a long journey from the USA to Switzerland, I got it and instantly fell in love with it. It's called Tree of Life and must be from the 70s. Here's a picture of one corner. Since I didn't think I was going to be able to handapplique it, i started appliqueing it by machine. I have to say that my sewing machine has a really nice applique stitch. On first look you wouldn't think it isn't stitched by hand. Nevertheless, it wasn't going good at all and after several frustrating moments, I packed it nicely and kept it in a drawer, where I keep other UFOs.
And now comes the good part: This year, I have no idea why, I suddenly felt a strong urge to look at it again and when I did unpack it, I fell in love with it all over again. And this time I was more courageous: I tried and handstitched the tiny pieces. And it worked. Hello, Tree of Life. It might get me a lifetime to ever finish this, but you and I are <3.

So there's that. And remember this baby quilt? Well it's been delivered to my sister-in-law and she just threw it in some drawer and it was never seen again. Guess she didn't like it because it was handmade. She prefers (expensive) shop bought stuff. Oh well.
But the good thing is that meanwhile my lovely niece is big enough to terrorize her mother with what she wants to wear. And since she's into princess-stuff, I made her this dress. And she loved it right away. Lucky me, lucky my niece :-)

Block #17

Now I could write I was too busy sewing and therefore cannot write much. But I prefer to stick to my boring honest self. I am too busy with other things I don't always really like being busy with such as work ;-) but for consolation I allow myself to sew a little block now and then. So there is not much time left for writing in my blog, either. But I guess posting a picture now and then seems worthwhile to me, as well.

Tubework

My latest creation is a fabric wreath for my mother. She saw it at a friend of hers and asked me whether I would make her one, too. She had a picture of the one she had seen and it was made with fabrics that were pretty similar and they had big roses on it. I went for three different greens so she could maybe put some girlands on it and some Christmas decoration. I am not sure but I think she's going to hang it on her door?

Meine neueste Kreation ist ein Stoffkranz für meine Mutter. Sie hat einen solchen bei einer Freundin gesehen und mich sogleich gefragt, ob ich ihr auch so einen nähen könnte. Sie hatte ein Foto vom anderen Kranz und der war mit ähnlichen Rosenstoffen angefertigt. Ich habe nun drei grüne Stoffe benutzt und so könnte sie vielleicht Girlanden und sonstige Weihnachtsdekoration daranhängen. Ich bin nicht sicher, aber ich glaube, es wird als Türschmuck dienen.

BOM not to become UFO

Today, I got to continue with this BOM I had started to work on early this year (!) now I was afraid it would become a UFO because I hadn't worked on it since May. So is started up again, and oh, it's just so much fun, especially since this is going to be a quilt I will keep for my very self, yes!
So here are block #15, 14 and 13.

Heute habe ich an diesem BOM weitergearbeitet, den ich anfangs dieses Jahres begonnen hatte (!) ich fürchtete, es würde ein UFO daraus werden, da ich zuletzt im Mai daran genäht hatte. Also habe ich es wiederaufgenommen und, ach es ist so schön, vor allem, weil dies ein Quilt wird, den ich für mich alleine behalten werde, ja!
Hier sind nun Blöcke 15, 14 und 13.

Newborn Baby

Just a quick post about my last quick creation: a baby blanket for a Newborn. It came ways too early and only weighted ONE tiny kilo! The proud father happens to be a friend of ours and when I heard the baby had already come, I wanted to be really quick and give him a little something for his son. I started off with the fish fabric I was given for Xmas. When I received it, I really didn't know what I was going to do with it, because the colours are so bright, but now I love the way it turned out. Oh, and by the way: although I really was in a hurry, I just HAD to handquilt around the Fishblocks :-)

Nur ein kurzes Post über meine letzte geschwinde Kreation: ein Babydeckchen für ein Neugeborenes. Es kam weit vor seiner Zeit und wog bei der Geburt nur EIN einziges Kilo! Der stolze Vater ist ein Bekannter von uns und als ich hörte, dass das Baby schon da war, wollte ich schnell etwas kleines für seinen Sohn nähen. Ich begann mit dem Fischstoff, der ein Weihnachtsgeschenk war. Als ich ihn erhielt, wusste ich zuerst gar nicht, was ich damit anfangen sollte, weil er so bunt ist. Aber ich finde, so kommt der Stoff wirklich toll zur Geltung. Ach übrigens, obwohl ich ziemlich in Eile war, MUSSTE ich einfach um die Fischblöcke herum handquilten :-)

Lovely Summer Pond

So I am sure I have told you about that wonderfull site FatCat Patterns before. It is Sindy's page and she has some crazy stories about her family and also she has a Summer Pond BOM up that has finished this month. When I saw it last year, I just completely fell in love with it and knew, I had to give it a try. Which, if I now reconsider was a pretty crazy idea because I was just new to quilting. So it became my very first applique project. Or my first "real" project. Those things I had done before were self designed and therefore croocked and not looking right, etc. When I started it, I was quite afraid it could become one of those scary UFOs I had read about and actually I do have some meanwhile, too. So you can imagine on how proud I am to have finally completed the quilt just yesterday. I sent it away today because it's to be my father's birthday gift. I didn't imagine it would be so hard to separe from it. I felt that I wanted to cuddle up with it, tracing the lines of the echo quilting I have done since it's "water". When I already had about 5-6 blocks, my dad admired them, so I told him that it was going to be his birthday present since his birthday was just in the last month of the BOM. He was terribly happy and said he would want to hang it over his bed so he could look at it from there. I think that's really sweet of him.


Sicherlich habe ich schon früher von der wunderbaren Seite FatCat Patterns erzählt. Es ist Sindys Seite und sie erzählt verrückte und lustige Geschichten über ihre Familie und sie hat auch einen Sommer Teich BOM auf ihrer Seite, der diesen Monat endete. Als ich den BOM letzten Jahr sah, verliebte ich mich sofort in den Quilt und ich musste es einfach versuchen. Rückblickend war das ein ziemliches Wagnis, da ich erst mit Patchwork und Quilten begonnen hatte. Und so wurde dies mein allererstes Aplikationsprojekt und eigentlich mein erstes "richtiges" Projekt überhaupt. Die Dinge, die ich davor genäht habe, waren Pi mal Handgelenk selber"durchdacht" oder eben auch nicht und sehen auch so aus. Als ich diesen BOM begann, hatte ich starke Befürchtungen, dass es ein UFO werden könnte, von denen ich schon gelesen hatte. Selbstverständlich haben sich solche Objekte auch bei mir mittlerweile angesammelt. Umso stolzer bin ich darauf, es gestern beendet zu haben. Ich habe es heute nun auf die Post gebracht, da es ein Geburtstagsgeschenk für meinen Vater ist. Ich hätte nicht gedacht, dass es mir so schwer fallen würde, mich davon zu trennen. Ich hätte so gerne noch damit gekuschelt und wäre den Echo Quilting Linien nachgefahren, die ich "wassergerecht" gearbeitet habe. Als ich schon etwa 5-6 Blöcke hatte, erzählte ich meinem Vater, der die vorhandenen Blöcke bewunderte, dass es sein Geburtstagsgeschenk werden würde, da er im letzten Monat des BOMs Geburtstag habe. Er war überglücklich und meinte, er würde es als Wandbehang verwenden über seinem Bett, damit er es vom Bett aus anschauen könnte. Ich finde die Idee wirklich lieb.

Back and Busy

I have been just so busy since I came back and yet I am not sure if I will be finished with all the stuff I was planing to complete AT LONG LAST. But I am (kinda) working on it. Now, the last mentionnable thing I have completed is this Baby Tug Blanket. The Design on the pocket front is my first bluework. The fabric used is from moda fabrics packs. Click here to take a look at it. I always thought of my motheres Baby Dolls being terribly unpractical until I needed a baby model. Thank you big baby with blue jacket, thanks Mom :-)

I read about Tug Blankets and they say that the baby is supposed to feel like it is still in the tummy and will feet more comfy.. I hope they are right. When I showed some pics to my soon-to-be-dad brother, he was very excited about it and asked me to make one for his baby. So I did and I am pretty pleased with the outcome!


Seit meiner Rückkehr bin ich sehr beschäftigt und dennoch nicht sicher, ob ich alles, was ich mir bis September zu beenden vorgenommen habe, auch hinkriege. Es sind Dinge der Sorte "Aufschub auf den St. Nimmerleinstag". Aber ich arbeite daran. Mein letztes nennenswertes Werk ist dieses Baby Puck Tuch. Die Stickerei auf der Vorderseite ist meine erste Bluework Stickerei und der Stoff ist von moda fabrics charm packs. Hier klicken, um einen Blick darauf zu werfen. Ich befand die Babypuppensammlung meiner Mutter bisher immer als schrecklich unpraktisch. Bis ich nun ein Babymodell brauchte. Danke grosses Baby mit der blauen Jacke und danke Mutti :-)

Ich habe über Pucktücher gelesen, dass sie den Zweck haben, dem Baby vorzugaukeln, es befinde sich noch immer im Mutterbauch und dass es sich deshalb schön bequem fühlen sollte. Ich hoffe, dass das stimmt. Als ich meinem Bruder, der bald Vater wird, Fotos davon zeigte, war er begeistert und fragte mich, ob ich so eines für sein Baby basteln könnte. Ehrensache! Ich bin denn auch ziemlich zufrieden mit dem Resultat!

Yes! Baby Quilt is Finished!

So I went to this patchwork shop in the city and of course they didn't have the needed thread colour so I keept cool and just bought another variegated thread, yet very similar to the one I started with. Then I ran home and quilted the rest of the throw. Now it's finally finished and I will wash this baby quilt tonight and it will be ready to be given away! To celebrate, I have baked some cinnamon buns. Yummie!

Ich bin also heute in diesen Patchwork Laden in die Stadt gefahren und natürlich hatten sie nicht den selben Faden, aber ich blieb ruhig und habe eben einen anderen Faden gekauft, welcher dem ersten sehr ähnlich sieht. Dann bin ich nach hause gerannt und habe die Baby Decke fertig gequiltet. Jetzt ist die Decke fertig und ich werde sie heute abend waschen, und schon ist sie fertig, verschenkt zu werden! Um dies zu feiern, habe ich Zimtschnecken gebacken. Lecker!

Running out of Thread!

I can't believe this actually happened to me! I ran out of thread in the middle of quilting! Now, I am not a very experienced quilter and therefore do not know why they keep telling that you should quilt the entire quilt BEFORE adding the binding. So I really hope it will turn out okay allthough I did already add the binding and will finish the quilting this week. The thing is, I am quite in a hurry because my brother will be visiting next week and I just had time last weekend. I was so angry with myself for not having bought enough thread! But those kind of spools thend to fool me, because they look so big and makes you think, they are endless. And it is this special variegated thread that you cannot find in any shop, just special ones and now I don't know if I will be able to find the same again but will only be going into town tomorrow. So wish me luck!





Ich kann nicht glauben, dass mir so etwas tatsächlich passiert ist! Mir ist mitten im Prozess des Quiltens der Faden ausgegangen! Da ich keine sehr erfahrerene Quilterin bin, weiss ich nicht, warum es immer heisst, man sollte den Quilt vollständig quilten, bevor man den Rand hinzufügt. Also hoffe ich nun, dass es trotzdem gut herauskommt, da ich den Rand nun schon dran gemacht habe und die Decke diese Woche nun fertig quilten werde. Das Ding ist, ich bin momentan etwas unter Zeitdruck, da mein Bruder bereits nächste Woche zu Besuch kommt und ich hatte grad so schön Zeit letztes Wochenende. Ich war so wütend auf mich, dass ich nicht genügend Faden eingekauft hatte! Aber ich lasse mich immer von dieser Art Fadenspulen überlisten, weil sie so dick und endlos ausschauen. Und dieser spezielle Verlaufsfaden (?) gibt es nur in bestimmten Spezialläden und ich weiss nicht, ob ich noch so eine Spule finden werde, kann allerdings auch erst morgen in die Stadt fahren. Wünscht mir Glück!

Solution!

So this is the solution. No, it's not what I originally intented, but then again, who except for me knew what it was supposed to look like? The front side remained unchanged. What you see here is the back side of the quilt. I think that after all, I am pretty happy with my brother's soon-to-be-born baby quilt!
Now let's quilt it! Yeah!

Das ist also meine Lösung. Nein, es ist nicht so geworden, wie ich es ursprünglich beabsichtigt hatte, aber wer ausser mir selbst weiss, wie es eigentlich hätte aussehen sollen? Die Vorderseite blieb unverändert. Hier zu sehen ist die Rückseite. Und ich denke, dass ich nun doch noch glücklich bin mit dem Baby Quilt für meinen Bruders Kind!
Nun ans quilten! Juhu!

Pain in my Head

Hier der Grund für grosses Kopfzerbrechen. Nicht nur, dass mir die blaue Farbe des (immerhin fertigen!) Vorderteils Sorgen macht (was, wenn es nun ein Mädchen ist?), vor allem aber der Rückteil, welcher unbedingt das Äffchenvlies enthalten soll, sind ein echter Kopfknacker sozusagen. Ich glaube, ich habe mindestens 100 umgeplant.. Ich habe nun gelb für die Mitte gewählt, weil Bananen gelb sind (macht das überhaupt Sinn?!) und rot, weil ich die roten Quadrate auf der Vorderseite am liebsten mochte und die Ecken sind übriggebliebenes vom Vorderteil, puh! Ich glaube, am besten werde ich jetzt auch das Rückteil fertig nähen und versuchen zu vergessen, dass mein Projekt nicht genauso wurde, wie ich es wollte!


This is the reason for the pain in my head. Alltough the top is finished, I am afraid the baby could be a girl and then what with all that blue?
But my real concerns are about the backing which must use this monkey fleece.. I think I have changed it a hundred times already by now.. I now have chosen yellow because bananas are yellow (does that make sense?!) and red because I liked the red parts of the top best. And for the corners, what was left from the top and I think I'll just have to finish this backing the way it is now and forget that it didn't turn out just the way I wanted it.

One Third Done

Ein Drittel der Anzahl Blöcke habe ich erst des Sentimental Stitches BOM geschafft. Oder soll ich sagen bereits? Es sind so viele!

Ich habe ein Baby Quilt Top begonnen und werde ein Bild einstellen, sobald ich es beendet habe. Es ist für das erste Kind meines Bruders und ich habe so meine Mühe, mich mit der Idee anzufreunden, dass ich in weniger als 7 Monate Tante werden soll! Weil es noch früh ist, wissen wir noch nicht, ob es ein Mädchen oder Junge wird, das Quilt Top jedenfalls habe ich in hell blau gehalten, ob das intelligent war?



So I have done only one third of the Sentimental Stitches BOM. Or should I say already? They're just so many! I have started a baby quilt top and will post a picture as soon as I have finished it. It's for my brother's first child, and I still have a hard time getting used to the idea that I am going to be a aunt in less than 7 months! Because it is still so early, we don't know yet wether it's going to be a girl or a boy. Anyways, the quilt top is held mainly in bright blue. Wonder if that was an intelligent thing to do?

Meinen heutigen Block für einen sorgenfreien Tag habe ich soeben fertig genäht.

I've been busy!

Ich war wirklich sehr fleissig die letzten Tage und habe weiter die schwarzen Ränder meinen schönen Blöckchen hinzugefügt. Dem aufmerksamen Betrachter wird nicht entgangen sein, dass meine Blöcke Seitenverkehrt sind von der Originalvorlage. So ist das immer bei mir. Schon beim letzten Applikations-BOM habe ich es geschafft, nicht zu merken, dass die uns die Vorlagen extra seitenverkehrt geben :-) Habe ich schon erwähnt, dass auch die schwarze Umrandung auf meinem Mist gewachsen ist? Ich dachte, das würde dem ganzen noch einen weiteren Touch "antik" verleihen.. zum guten Glück habe ich genügend schwarzen Faden!

Chilikatze geht es wunderbar, sie hat das super Wetter echt genossen und liegt jetzt gerade wieder draussen. Ich habe festgestellt, dass sie so ihre Lieblingsplätze hat auf dem Rasen und komischerweise gilbt das Gras aus auf diesen Stellen? Ist sie etwa für die Pflanzen zu schwer? Sie wiegt etwa 6.5 Kilos.


So here you can see how busy I have been lately stitching up all these lovely blocks. The attentive spectator will have noticed that my blocks are all mirrors of the original pattern. That's just the way it happens to me. This is now the second appliquee-BOM I'm doing "wrong". Every time I work with applique I always forget that they always give us the reversed pattern so we should have less work :-)
Have I mentionned already that also the black stitching is not original but my idea, hoping it would give the block an extra antique look. Gladly, I have enough black thread for all the blocks!
Chilicat is doing great. She has been enjoying our great wheather a lot and been laying outdoors in the grass a lot. She actually is too right now. I have noticed that she has certain spots in the grass where she likes to lay down. For some strange reason the grass there has turned yellow. I wonder why. Is she too heavy for the plants to bear? She weighs about 6.5 kilos.

Big Flower

Wie ich also bereits angekündigt habe, gibt es nun täglich (!) einen neuen Block von Sally Posts Flower Sampler. Selbstverständlich bin ich jetzt etwas im Verzug aber dennoch sehr entzückt. Ist wirklich toll, was die Dame sich da hat einfallen lassen, diese Originalität: ich liebe es!




As I have already mentionned before, there is now one block per day from Sally Post's Flower Sampler. Of course, I am in a delay now but still really delighted. I just love the originality of that lady's imagination!

Great May

Fertig mit der Warterei!

Alles schön macht der Mai und Gayle von sentimental stitches hat beschlossen, jeden Tag im Mai ein Block der insgesamt 36 Blöcke zu posten, um ihre langjährige Ehe zu ehren. Schöne Idee!

Sobald ich den nächsten Block holen und nähen konnte, werde ich ihn hier einstellen!

It's going to be a great may since Gayle from sentimental stitches has decided to post one of the 36 blocks every day of the month in order to honour her longyear marriage. A beautiful idea!
As soon as I can get and sew the next block, I'll post it here!

Third block up!

Juhu! Habe nun heute Abend den dritten Block von insgesamt 36 (!) zu ende genäht. Sehr schön und jetzt heisst es warten, bis der Wonnemonat kommt. Seufz.

Chilikatze geht es weiterhin gut, das mit dem Malheur im Garten war sicher einem schlechten Bodenkrümel zuzuschreiben. Sie wartet bereits auf meinem Bett mit vorwurfsvollem Blick: "Wann kommst du endlich, ich bin schon den ganzen Tag müde!"

Jaja, ich komme schon!

Yes! I have now completed block #3 of a total of 36 blocks (!). Very nice and now I'll just have to try and be patient until the next one's online. Sigh.
Chilicat is doing just fine. That malheur that happened to her in the garden the other day certainly was due to a bad crumb off the floor. She's now already waiting for me to get to bed already, since she's had SUCH a busy day. -Allright, I'm coming!
